Tips for Equalizing Ears Like a Pro

Equalizing your ears is one of the first skills every diver learns — and one of the most important for comfort and safety. Mastering it early sets you up for a better dive career.### Equalize Early and OftenStart equalizing before you even descend. Swallow, yawn, or gently pinch your nose and blow as you descend — every 1–2 feet. Don’t wait until you feel pressure.### Use the Right TechniqueThe Valsalva (pinch nose and blow) is common but not the only method. Try the Toynbee (pinch nose and swallow) or Frenzel technique for more control. Experiment with gentle combinations to see what works for you.### Descend Feet FirstDescending feet first helps air travel more easily through the Eustachian tubes. Use a mooring or descent line when possible to control your pace.### Don’t Push Through PainIf you feel sharp pain or can't equalize, ascend slightly and try again. Forcing it can cause barotrauma or permanent damage. Skipping a dive is better than injuring your ears.**Practice makes perfect — and pain-free. Good equalization is a sign of a skilled, safe diver.**
