As an Assistant Instructor, you’ll learn to teach entry-level dive programs, assist with scuba courses, and inspire others to discover the joy of underwater exploration — all while building the skills and confidence to continue your journey toward becoming a PADI Instructor.

About the Instructor Development Course (IDC)

The IDC is made up of two parts:

  • Assistant Instructor (AI) course
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program

You can complete the AI course on its own, or continue directly into the full IDC and Instructor Examination (IE) to become a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

  • Instructor Examination (IE) fees (if continuing to OWSI)
  • Medical evaluation (if not completed recently)

Prerequisites

To enroll in the PADI Assistant Instructor course, you must be:

  • A certified PADI Divemaster (or equivalent)
  • A certified diver for at least 6 months
  • At least 18 years old
  • Completed EFR Primary & Secondary Care training within the last 24 months
  • Have a medical statement signed by a physician within the past 12 months
  • Logged at least 60 dives (100 dives required for full Instructor Exam)

Advance When You’re Ready

After completing the AI course, you can progress into the OWSI program and attend a PADI Instructor Examination (IE) to become a full Open Water Scuba Instructor. If you're already certified with another training agency, you may qualify to enter the OWSI directly.
